Drawing inspiration from the iconic 1991 animated film, Beauty and the Beast enjoyed a remarkable 13-year run on Broadway from 1994 to 2007. Directed by Robert Jess Roth and featuring a book by original screenwriter Linda Woolverton. With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. This production garnered nine Tony Award nominations, including nods for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.
The reimagined touring production will reunite the talents of Menken, Rice, and Woolverton, along with several other key members of the original creative team. Notable figures such as choreographer-turned-director Matt West, scenic designer Stanley A. Meyer, and lighting designer Natasha Katz will bring their expertise to the stage once more. Ann Hould-Ward, recipient of the 1994 Tony Award for Costume Design, returns to oversee costumes, while new dance music arrangements by David Chase inject fresh energy into the beloved score. Additionally, long-time collaborators Michael Kosarin and Danny Troob will serve as music supervisor/arranger and orchestrator, respectively.
Completing the design ensemble are sound designer John Shivers, projection and video designer Darrel Maloney, and hair and makeup designer David H. Lawrence. Illusion designer Jim Steinmeyer, who worked on the original 1994 production, will once again captivate audiences with his magical creations.
Thomas Schumacher, Chief Creative Officer of Disney Theatrical Group, expressed excitement about the refreshed rendition, stating, “We’ve heard from audiences for three decades now that Beauty and the Beast has profoundly touched them—these characters, songs, and this sweeping story.” He added, “How proud we are, then, to bring this refreshed and human take on the show—with the scale and spectacle the title deserves—to longtime fans and an entirely new generation. This Beauty is for them.”
