How Disney Cruise Line Supports Youth in Port Communities

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) recently celebrated the opening of its new specially designed terminal at Port Everglades in Broward County, and with its arrival to the new port, joined in new youth education initiatives, including teaming up with Junior Achievement (JA) of South Florida – an organization that empowers youth with the knowledge, ability and confidence to navigate their futures, drive the economy, and lead our community.

Earlier this year, DCL and JA hosted an interactive career panel for dozens of students participating in JA Career Bound, a program designed to help students build work-readiness skills and gain knowledge of local industries. Crew members, from a range of areas, shared details with students about their roles, life at sea and tips for pursuing a maritime career.

One panelist, Gabe Biser, human resources manager aboard the Disney Dream, is a former Junior Achievement student. He appreciates his mentors in the program who encouraged him to learn about different career paths. “Being part of the cruise industry has been an incredible experience, and I am grateful for the mentors who guided me along my career journey,” said Biser. “It’s an honor to share my experiences with these students, and I hope to inspire them to explore industries they may not be familiar with.”

After the career panel, students explored Port Everglades, touring unique spaces, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at port and terminal operations.

Junior Achievement Job Shadow – Eleuthera

And on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas, where DCL’s new island destination, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, opens this summer, students learned about a whole new world when they met with DCL cast members who spoke about careers with Disney, both on land and at sea. The high school students are currently in the Junior Achievement Eleuthera (JA) Job Shadow, a program designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of their talents, interests, and values.

“It was a privilege to share my career experiences and highlight the exciting and diverse Disney opportunities available for Bahamians,” Leslie Lopez, human resources manager, DCL. “Our hope is that events like this help inspire our young people to explore their interests and follow their dreams.”

Following the career panel, the students also participated in a resume writing workshop with panelists.

“Disney Cruise Line’s support means the world to local students. It not only opens doors to new opportunities but also instills a sense of hope and motivation,” said Clara Young, JA Eleuthera programme coordinator. “Through their support, Disney Cruise Line is empowering our students to dream big, believe in themselves, and achieve their goals with confidence.”

Junior Achievement: Literacy and Career Exploration Experience – Nassau

As part of its overall investment in Junior Achievement Bahamas this year, DCL supported an event called BahamaJAC in Nassau. This event is a three-day financial literacy and career exploration experience, designed specifically for Junior Achievement students across The Bahamas. The goal of the event is to inspire the students to prepare for their future careers and succeed.

DCL professionals from various areas of the business joined the panel to share their expertise and advice for students looking to learn about careers in hospitality and the maritime industry.
